GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing objects and events. It combines the power of a database with the visualization capabilities of an easy-to-understand maps. Good decisions require good information. Producing good information requires tools—powerful tools to help people organize and think about data and information in new ways.  With the visual power of a map, policy makers, planners, and the public alike can consider and discuss a number of different issues with a common understanding of the situation and the probable implications of their decisions.

GIS technology is used throughout the world to solve problems in areas such as environmental protection, health care, land use, business efficiency, education and social inequities.

A GIS manages the good information collected by local government and provides a way to incorporate, visualize, and understand the relationships between different types of data to create new information.  A GIS allows decision makers to present this new information more clearly to the citizens.  For local government decision makers and managers, the availability of GIS as a tool for better decision making has profound implications in three major areas:

  • Service delivery (clean water, sanitary sewers, sewage treatment; road construction and maintenance; police, fire, and emergency medical response; 9-1-1 services data and maps in dispatch)
  • Governance and public policy (understand issues, evaluate options, select policy, implement policy, and evaluate policy consequences)
  • Public information and community engagement (present complex data that is easily understood, accurate and truthfully reflects its meaning)

PASSPORT SERVICES

The Stevens County GIS Department handles all passport application processes.

Please call (620) 544-2559 or email your questions to passports@stevenscoks.org.

You can also come in to GIS Department to pick up forms or ask questions.

Appointments are not necessary to apply for passports; but if you are planning to come between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. call so lunch hour can be arranged around the time you plan to apply.
